Bio
Marie Erichsen is a pianist, accompanist, and piano instructor based in Hampton Roads, Virginia. She studied piano performance at both Hillsdale College and Old Dominion University, and has interests in teaching, accompaniment, and music theater direction.
Marie began playing the piano at the age of 9, and during high school began intensive study of classical piano with Dr. Ronald Shinn at Huntington College in Montgomery, Alabama. Marie was an 11th and 12th grade state finalist in the National Music Teachers Association (MTNA) competitions, and later continued her study of classical piano performance at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan, where she also taught beginning piano students and accompanied numerous voice and violin students. She graduated in 2010 with a B.A. in History and a music minor. After freelancing for several years, she elected to continue her music studies at Old Dominion University under Dr. Oksana Lutsyshyn.
Marie has extensive freelance experience in both classical and popular styles of music. She is an accomplished church musician, currently employed at Bayside Christian Church in Virginia Beach. She has accompanied for vocal students at Christopher Newport University, Regent University, and Eastern Virginia School for the Performing Arts, and has played seasonally at Busch Gardens. She has also served as the rehearsal pianist and keyboardist for musical theater productions at Regent University, York County School of the Arts, Peninsula Community Theatre, Poquoson Island Players, and Williamsburg Players. She served as the keyboardist for The Memories, a 50's/60's and country cover band, and she frequently freelances as a pianist for weddings and other special events. In the summer of 2015, Marie served as the Music Directing Intern for West Virginia Public Theater's summer season. From 2016-2018, she served as the staff accompanist for Camp Arena Stage in Washington D.C.
In addition to her work as a performer, Marie has taught beginning and intermediate piano students at Centerstage Academy in Yorktown, Virginia, and now teaches out of her home. As a teacher, Marie’s goals are twofold. First, due to personal struggles with wrist pain for many years, she has developed a keen awareness of the elements of healthy keyboard posture and technique, which she has a passion for passing on to her students. Secondly, she desires to help her students develop a love of exploring the piano and creating music, becoming players who are comfortable, creative, and enthusiastic at the keyboard.
